Your time and effort will directly contribute to the preservation and conservation of this precious natural space. As a volunteer, you'll be part of our close-knit community, working side by side with welcoming individuals who share your passion for nature.
We meet every Thursday, rain or shine, from 9:20am to 12:00pm. You can come any Thursday your schedule permits, and choose from a range of tasks that meet your physical abilities – facility maintenance, all the way to getting your hands in the dirt. Coffee and snacks are served as a thank you at the Woods Room afterwards. No prior experience is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to lend a hand.

We offer a number of on-site school programs here at Morrell. Our School Programs are designed to encourage a sense of wonder and connection to nature by introducing children to the native plants and animals of Coastal Vancouver Island. All our programs are run by our trained team of volunteer Nature Interpreters. Please note that we can only run programs based on their availability. We recommend a maximum of 30 students per program, to ensure quality student-interpreter interaction.
Morrell Sanctuary is a typical second growth forest. This program will show students how to identify 7 of the most common trees found in our Coastal Douglas Fir biome.
Walk-in — 2 hours — $60
This is a fun introduction to learn about the common creatures in our pond environment and how they survive.
Drive-in — 1.5 hours — $55
This program provides a study of various relationships within the forest community, focusing on the basic characteristics of a forest ecosystem.

Students will search for signs of biodiversity in Morrell's forest community, utilizing observation, investigation, and deduction skills.
Drive-in — 1.5 hours — $55
Provides a gentle introduction to forest life, and lifestyle traits of a number of forest animals through the use of hand puppets. A nature walk that will encourage children to use their senses to explore the forest.

A nature walk, focusing on our local plant and animal life, and encouraging children to use their senses to explore the environment.
Drive-in — 1.5 hours — $55
An introduction to our Beaver Pond community where students will investigate the lives of beavers, ducks, and frogs. This program concludes with the very popular "frog dress-up"!

Walk-in — 2 hours — $60
Students will observe plants/animals by dipping and collecting specimens from the pond. Life-cycles, adaptations, and identification will be discussed.

This program provides a study of our Coastal Douglas-fir Zone and the relationship between plants, animals and non-living factors.

This program will focus on the concepts of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and certain plants that were once vitally important to the Coast Salish Peoples of British Columbia.

In addition to our on-site school programs, we also offer two valuable in-school programs. In-school programs are available for Gr. K-3 throughout the school year, Monday to Friday. Trained Nature Interpreters will present your class with a variety of activities to reinforce the concept of each program. The cost of each program is $45.00 for one hour of instruction.

Students will be shown actual specimens from various species and of course puppets. This presentation ties into Classification of Species. (Plan at least 15 min. extra).
An informative program based on endangered animals. Students will participate in a group discussion, activities and games as they gain an awareness of the concept of endangerment.
